It’s a beautiful thing when you see someone—especially a kid—find that spark, that thing that lights them up from the inside out. But here’s the truth we don’t talk about enough: even when you find your passion, it doesn’t always come easily. Sometimes you hit a wall. Sometimes you want to quit. And sometimes, that’s the exact moment you’re on the edge of a breakthrough.

This past summer, my son was ready to hang up his drumsticks. We’ve always tried to give our son opportunities to explore his interests—soccer, karate, drama classes, you name it. Each time, we thought, Maybe this is the thing!  But nothing really stuck.

Except drums & Drama classes. But most impactful lately has been drums.

A few years ago, my brother surprised us by giving our son an electric drum kit, and something about it clicked. For years, my brother has been the “fun uncle” who shows up to our house with new ways for my kids—and particularly my son—to discover joy—Lego kits, a skateboard, a bicycle, a ukulele, a balance board, even those inflatable sumo wrestling suits (which, for the record, are as hilarious as they sound).

My son loves drumming — the rhythm, the energy, the way he can express himself without words. But this last spring, the novelty started to wear off. Practice felt like work. The progress felt slow. He hit that wall so many of us know—the “I’m just not good enough” or “maybe this isn’t for me after all” wall.

Enter his amazing drum teacher. He has this quiet superpower: he knows when to challenge, when to encourage, and when to simply say, “Let’s keep going.” And that’s what he did. He convinced my kiddo to push through this summer, to keep showing up even when it wasn’t fun, to trust that the joy would return on the other side of the struggle.

And you know what? It did.

There’s something magical about perseverance—the moment you decide to stay with something, even when it’s hard, even when it’s messy. That’s where growth happens. It’s true for music, for faith, for relationships, for life. The spark that begins as curiosity can grow into passion—but only if we’re willing to nurture it through the dull, difficult, or discouraging seasons.

So this year, for his birthday, our kiddo got a real acoustic drum kit. Not because he’s suddenly a perfect drummer or because it’s time to “level up,” but because he’s earned it. He’s stuck with it. He’s found something that feels like his—and he didn’t give up when it got hard.

Sometimes the most important thing we can do—for our kids, and for ourselves—is not to chase the next shiny hobby or new idea, but to stay faithful to the one that’s already in our hands. Passion isn’t always found in the fireworks—it’s often forged in the quiet, steady beat of perseverance.

And if you listen closely, you just might hear it—the rhythm of persistence, the sound of joy returning, the heartbeat of someone discovering who they’re becoming.

Keep showing up. Keep playing your song. Your rhythm matters.
